The Director\u2019s Cut: Kaniehtiio Horn Uses Comedy to Combat the Trauma of Anti-Indigeneity<\/a><\/h2>\n

The profound racism and countless tragedies Indigenous people have experienced over hundreds of years are no laughing matter. Yet for actor, writer, producer, and director Kaniehtiio (GANYE-dee-yo) Horn, comedy is a force that can be used to better the lives of herself and others. \u201cHow would we get this far if we were just walking around angry?\u201d she remarks from her home on the Kahnaw\u00e0:ke Mohawk reserve south of Montreal. Comedy \u201cis part of our survival. I\u2019ve grown up hearing laughter in the craziest times.\u201d She remembers being a little kid going to sleep while the adults gathered in the other room talking about politics, yet there was still lots of laughter. \u201cIf we weren\u2019t able to laugh, then that would be really, really sad.\u201d \u2014Bernadette Morra<\/em><\/p>\n
